What's worth seeing and how best to plan a visit?
A brief history
The tradition of holding Christmas markets in Italy has roots dating back to the late Middle Ages, when seasonal markets in regions such as Tuscany and Bolzano provided a place to exchange goods before the holidays. The oldest fair in Italy is believed to be the one in Bologna, associated with the feast of Saint Lucia, first held in the 18th century. The modern form of fairs developed especially in the 1990s, when the first modern fair was established in Bolzano in 1991, quickly becoming a model for other cities. Taking inspiration from its Alpine neighbors Austria and Germany, Italy created its own unique style of "mercatini di Natale," combining German wooden huts with an Italian passion for arts, crafts and culinary traditions. Today, markets are spaces that highlight the identity of a region, attracting people who value tradition and authentic experiences. Particularly in northern Italy, especially in Trentino-Alto Adige, this tradition is deeply rooted and an integral part of Advent celebrations.
